AVIF is new, and lots of apps and websites can’t open it yet. Converting to WebP fixes that: much smaller than JPG and PNG.
Drop one AVIF or a hundred — they’re converted inside your browser, so even private photos are never uploaded anywhere.
AVIF vs WebP
| AVIF | WebP | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy or lossless | Lossy or lossless |
| Transparency | Yes | Yes |
| Animation | Yes | Yes |
| File size | Often 50% smaller than JPG | 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same quality |
| Compatibility | Modern browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari 16+); limited in desktop apps | All modern browsers; some older apps and upload forms still reject it |
| Best for | The smallest possible files for modern websites | Websites and online stores that need fast-loading images |
Good to know before converting AVIF to WebP
- WebP files are smaller, but double-check that the app or site you’re uploading to accepts WebP.
- Hidden data like GPS location and camera details is left out of the converted file.
What is AVIF?
AVIF is the newest mainstream image format, based on the AV1 video codec. It squeezes photos dramatically smaller than JPG while keeping them sharp, and supports transparency and HDR. It’s still new, so many apps and websites don’t accept it yet.
What is WebP?
WebP was made by Google to make websites load faster. It does everything JPG and PNG do — including transparency — in noticeably smaller files. The catch: plenty of desktop apps, government portals and older software still can’t open it.
How to convert AVIF to WebP
- Drop your AVIF files (or paste with Ctrl+V).
- WebP is already selected — adjust quality if you like.
- Download one by one or all as a ZIP.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting AVIF to WebP reduce quality?
Only very slightly. WebP is lossy or lossless; at the default quality the difference is practically invisible. Raise the quality slider for maximum fidelity.
Can I convert many AVIF files at once?
Yes — drop as many as you like and download them all as one ZIP.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Everything happens inside your browser on your own device. Your images are never uploaded, stored or seen by anyone — check your browser's Network tab, or turn on airplane mode after the page loads and see that it still works.
Is it really free?
Yes. No sign-up, no watermark, no daily limits and no paid “HD” downloads.
Do downloads still contain my location?
No. Every file you download is saved without hidden metadata like GPS location, camera serial number or owner name.
